China's AI Companion Crackdown Isn't Really About Artificial Intelligence

It's about love. And whether we're quietly lowering the bar for being human.

Every generation gets the technology that promises to solve loneliness.

The telephone.

Television.

The internet.

Social media.

Dating apps.

Now we have artificial companions—software that remembers your birthday, asks how your meeting went, tells you you're brilliant, never rolls its eyes, never forgets an anniversary, and somehow remains fascinated by your thoughts on lawn fertilizer after midnight.

It's almost suspicious.

China has noticed.

In a move that stunned much of the technology world, Chinese regulators recently introduced rules aimed specifically at AI companion applications—systems designed not merely to answer questions or complete tasks, but to sustain ongoing emotional relationships with users.

The regulations require platforms to identify emotional distress, intervene during crises, discourage excessive dependency, protect personal data, and reduce unhealthy emotional attachment.

At first glance, it looks like another government regulating another technology.

I think it's something much more interesting.

China may be asking one of the first truly adult questions about artificial intelligence.

Not,

"Can machines think?"

Not,

"Will AI replace our jobs?"

But,

"What happens when machines begin replacing something far more intimate?"

That question deserves our attention.

Not because it came from China.

Because it came at all.

Your Brain Doesn't Care That It's Silicone Valley

One of neuroscience's less flattering discoveries is that our attachment systems are surprisingly easy to recruit.

Human beings evolved to notice consistency.

Attention.

Warmth.

Responsiveness.

Predictability.

When something remembers us, comforts us, notices our moods, and responds with patience, the brain begins treating that interaction as socially meaningful.

It doesn't automatically stop to ask whether the other participant possesses consciousness.

Or a heartbeat.

Or parents.

That's why people name their cars.

Apologize to robotic vacuum cleaners.

say please and thank you to ChatGPT.

It's also why emotionally sophisticated AI companions are becoming psychologically compelling.

The attachment is real.

The relationship is not.

That distinction may become one of the defining psychological challenges of the next decade.

What Forty-Five Minutes in a Therapy Office Can Teach Silicon Valley

I've spent my professional life helping couples navigate the moments that quietly unravel relationships—misunderstandings that accumulate one painful conversation at a time.

My work has included clinical practice, teaching, developing relationship interventions, and training therapists internationally, including through the LingYu Institute in Canada, where I periodically address emerging trends in relationship science.

Over the past 5 years, I’ve been invited twice by the Institute to present a comprehensive review of the latest research on infidelity and attachment.

I enjoy this work because my clinical teaching role remains grounded in emerging research evidence as well as lived experience.

Despite profound cultural differences, the client conversations I discuss with these Chinese family therapists are remarkably familiar to them.

Not once—not a single time—has someone entered my office saying,

"I wish my spouse were smarter."

Instead they say,

"She doesn't hear me."

"He doesn't understand me."

"I don't think I matter anymore."

Partners rarely come seeking admiration from the get-go.

First, they come seeking recognition.

They want their lifepartner to genuinely know them.

Those are profoundly different longings.

Admiration flatters the ego.

Being truly seen steadies the soul.

Artificial intelligence may become extraordinarily good at creating the experience of being understood.

Whether it can participate in the reality of mutual love is an entirely different question.

And that is where this story becomes far more interesting than technology.

The Perfect Partner Never Interrupts

One of the dirty little secrets of couples therapy is that the happiest relationships are not the ones with the fewest disagreements.

They're the ones with the most successful repairs.

That sounds backwards.

Most folks imagine great marriages as peaceful places where conflict has somehow been eliminated. In reality, healthy couples interrupt each other.

They misunderstand one another. They become defensive. They occasionally say spectacularly unhelpful things before breakfast.

One of current clients, to my eternal consternation, calls his pregnant wife, and the mother of his two children, a fucking bitch when he becomes dysregulated.

Of course, I scold him ceaselessly for this.

Then something remarkable happens.

He repairs.

"I'm sorry."

"Tell me that again."

"I think I missed what you were trying to say."

"Help me understand."

Those moments are not interruptions to intimacy.

They are intimacy.

A machine never has to repair a relationship because it was never truly in one in the first place.

The Seduction of Effortless Love

An AI companion never wakes up in a bad mood.

Never feels neglected.

Never wonders why you forgot dinner with its parents.

Never says,

"We've had this conversation three times already."

Frankly, it's exhausting how emotionally regulated they are.

If you've ever been married, you should immediately become suspicious.

Life partners are gloriously inconvenient.

They misunderstand text messages.

They become anxious.

They misread facial expressions.

They carry childhood wounds into ordinary Tuesday evenings.

Sometimes they're wonderful.

Sometimes they're impossible.

Usually they're both just before lunch.

That's not a design flaw.

That's humanity.

The danger isn't that machines become too human.

It's that humans begin expecting relationships to feel as effortless as software.

Love Is Not Customer Service

Modern technology has quietly trained us to expect frictionless experiences.

Your groceries arrive in an hour.

Movies begin instantly.

Your GPS apologizes when it makes a mistake.

Your streaming service somehow knows you're in the mood for Scandinavian crime dramas.

Everything is becoming more personalized.

More efficient.

More responsive.

It's only natural that someone would eventually ask:

"Why can't relationships work this way?"

Because relationships aren't services.

They're covenants.

Your spouse is not an emotional concierge.

Neither are you.

Love isn't measured by how efficiently someone satisfies your emotional requests.

It's measured by what two people become because they continue choosing one another when doing so becomes difficult.

That transformation requires resistance.

Just as muscles grow by pushing against weight, character grows by loving someone who occasionally disappoints us.

Take away the resistance...

...and you may also remove the growth.

What Neuroscience Actually Says

The neuroscience behind attachment is both fascinating and deeply humbling.

Our brains are prediction machines.

They constantly ask,

"Am I safe?"

"Am I seen?"

"Will someone come if I need them?"

When another person consistently responds with warmth and reliability, neural pathways associated with trust and emotional regulation become stronger.

Secure attachment literally changes the way the brain anticipates the future.

Artificial companions can imitate many of these cues.

They can remember your preferences.

Validate your feelings.

Offer reassurance.

Respond within seconds.

Those interactions can absolutely reduce distress.

They may even reduce loneliness in the short term.

But neuroscience also tells us something equally important.

Healthy attachment develops through reciprocity.

Not simply receiving comfort...

...but learning to give it.

Not merely being understood...

...but struggling to understand someone else.

Not avoiding disappointment...

...but repairing it.

Growth occurs inside the relationship itself.

Here’s the thing. Reciprocal shaping cannot occur if one participant has no independent needs, no vulnerability, no genuine freedom, and no capacity to be transformed by the other.

In other words, your nervous system may respond to simulated care.

Your character is formed by real relationships.

Those are not the same thing.

The Great Trade

Every generation makes bargains with technology.

Usually we don't realize what we've traded until years later.

Social media gave us connection.

It also gave us comparison.

Smartphones gave us convenience.

They also colonized our attention.

Artificial intelligence promises companionship without conflict.

That sounds irresistible.

Until you ask what conflict was teaching us in the first place.

Perhaps disagreement was cultivating patience.

Perhaps misunderstanding was teaching humility.

Perhaps forgiveness was quietly building the strongest parts of our character.

Perhaps the most important moments in love were never the easy ones.

Perhaps they were always the repairs.

If that's true, then the greatest danger posed by AI companions isn't that we'll accidentally fall in love with machines.

It's that we'll slowly forget why imperfect human beings have always been worth the trouble.

The Pope, the Party, and the Therapist

This is not the beginning of a joke.

A communist government.

The leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

A marriage and family therapist from Massachusetts.

They rarely occupy the same paragraph.

Yet here we are.

One worries about social stability.

One worries about human dignity.

One worries about attachment.

Different languages.

Different philosophies.

Different first principles.

Remarkably similar concerns.

That should make us pause.

When folks this diverse begin asking the same question, it is usually because something important is happening beneath the surface.

Three Roads to the Same Intersection

China's new regulations suggest that emotional dependence on artificial companions is more than a consumer issue.

It is becoming a public health issue.

A societal issue.

Perhaps even a civilizational one.

Pope Leo XIV has approached the same subject from an entirely different direction.

He has argued that artificial intelligence must always remain at the service of the human person—not the other way around.

Again and again, he has returned to a simple but profound concern: technology should enhance human dignity, never diminish it.

The measure of progress is not whether our machines become more convincing, but whether our humanity becomes deeper.

As therapists, we ask yet another question.

What happens to attachment when one member of the relationship has no needs?

No fears.

No childhood.

No history.

No capacity to be wounded.

No genuine freedom.

At that point, are we still describing a relationship?

Or are we merely describing a curated, one-sided human experience?

That distinction matters more than it first appears.

Love Requires Two Nervous Systems

Every meaningful relationship changes both life partners.

Parents are changed by children.

Children are changed by parents.

Friends shape one another.

Lovers reshape one another, sometimes in beautiful ways and sometimes in painful ones.

No one leaves authentic intimacy exactly as they entered it.

Love is reciprocal neurobiology.

It is two nervous systems continually learning one another.

Sometimes they synchronize.

Sometimes they collide.

Sometimes they fail spectacularly.

Then they begin again.

Artificial intelligence can become astonishingly skilled at adapting to us.

It cannot ask us to adapt to it.

It has preferences because programmers gave it preferences.

It has empathy because engineers modeled empathy.

It has memories because databases preserve them.

It does not possess an interior life that is altered by our existence.

Without reciprocity, something essential disappears.

Why Friction Is Not the Enemy

For years Silicon Valley has sold us frictionless experiences.

One click.

Instant delivery.

Automatic updates.

Seamless integration.

Those are wonderful goals for software.

They are terrible goals for marriage.

A relationship without friction is not intimacy.

It's customer service.

The greatest moments in love rarely happen because everything went according to plan.

They happen after misunderstanding.

After disappointment.

After someone says,

"You're right."

"I hurt you."

"Let's start over."

Machines do not need forgiveness.

People do.

And forgiveness is one of the most neurologically, psychologically, and spiritually transformative experiences human beings can have.

No algorithm grows because it forgave someone.

No chatbot wakes at three in the morning wondering whether it has become a better partner.

Growth belongs to living beings.

Not software.

What We Lose When Love Becomes Convenient

I worry that our culture, and perhaps others as well, have mistaken comfort for intimacy.

The two are not the same.

Comfort says,

"I feel better."

Love says,

"We became better."

An AI companion may become extraordinarily comforting.

Perhaps life-saving for someone in profound isolation.

Perhaps a bridge through grief.

Perhaps an accessible source of encouragement for someone who has nowhere else to turn.

Those are meaningful possibilities.

We should not dismiss them.

But bridges are meant to lead somewhere.

They are not meant to become the destination.

The purpose of artificial intelligence should be to help people return to human relationships—not quietly replace them.

When simulation becomes preferable to reciprocity, we have not solved loneliness.

We have simply anesthetized it.

The Real Test of Artificial Intelligence

The great question facing artificial intelligence is not whether machines will someday convince us that they love us.

Given enough sophistication, many probably will.

The real question is whether our growing affection for machines will slowly diminish our willingness to undertake the difficult, frustrating, magnificent work of loving one another.

That is not merely a technological question.

It is a moral one.

It is a neurological one.

It is a philosophical one.

It is a theological one.

And, increasingly, it is becoming a therapeutic one.

Perhaps China recognized the danger first.

Perhaps Pope Leo articulated it most clearly.

For my part, I encounter it every so often in my therapy office.

Partners are not starving for flawless conversations.

They are starving for faithful ones.

Not perfection.

Presence.

Not endless affirmation.

Mutual transformation.

The future of artificial intelligence will not be decided solely by engineers.

It will also be shaped by the choices ordinary folks make every day.

Will we use these remarkable tools to strengthen our capacity for human love?

Or will we slowly allow them to become a substitute for the very relationships that make us fully human?

That, in the end, is the only question that matters.
