FAQs

Hi there, I'm Daniel

I'm Daniel Dashnaw MFT. I’m so happy you've taken this first step.

I'm a Marriage and Family Therapist. I work with couples and families. I look forward to helping you navigate this difficult and bewildering time.

  • There are a variety of benefits that can come from therapy, and they tend to be a your mileage may vary kind of situation.

If you decide to work with me, I’ll be there to provide support, teach you specific skills, and co-create new coping strategies for issues like anxiety, depression, stress, or even creative blocks.

You don’t need to have some kind of ‘major disorder’ to benefit from working with me.

But if some element of your life is bogging you down… if you’re looking for research-based help with family problems, or marital issues, I can help.

Basically, I’ll offer a different perspective on what’s bothering you – perhaps a point of view that might be utterly new.

My work is result oriented. I do the research, point you in the right direction, and help you co-create more robust solutions for what you’re looking for.

Obviously I can’t just provide a “data-dump” that will ‘fix’ everything as we stand by and watch.

But I will provide you with interventions and resources that can be stunningly effective.

You’ll want to use these new resources in your everyday life. These are interventions that only matter to motivated couples.

Grasping a deeper understanding of who you are

    • Identifying your goals and dreams

    • Obtaining the right skills for bettering your life’s relationships

    • Learning resources to put an end to the issues that brought you to therapy

    • Managing problem areas in your personal life, like anger, stress, depression, etc.

    • Creating new patterns of behavior for yourself

    • Changing your problem-solving perspective

    • Boosting your self-esteem and confidence

  • Therapy should be a safe place for humans seeking help. My approach is to assess carefully. I conduct a series of Family of Origin (FOO) interviews.

My attention is always keenly focused on what you would prefer to experience instead of your present reality.

I’ll heed your goals and needs during our initial therapeutic process. Once the assessment is complete, I’ll customize interventions, resources, and homework to help you better navigate those areas in your life that you're finding challenging or unsatisfying.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy is my foundation, and because individuals are complex, I don’t naively assume that one key opens all doors. I am also deeply trained in EFT ( emotionally focused couples therapy), the Developmental Model, as well as postmodern approaches such as Narrative and Solution-Focused therapies.

  • I consider myself a Marriage and Family Therapist who fell into doing a sh*tload of couples therapy work.

I was one of the founders of the largest science-based couples therapy practice in the USA, while I was still in school.

Although as a result of the success of CTI, I’m privileged and fortunate to work with intelligent , successful, and highly motivated clients. Although I work with C level executives, musicians, actors, I also spend twice as much time every week working with struggling young parents in the breathtaking Berkshires of Western Massachusetts..

I do a great deal of affair recovery, and family estrangement work. I also have very specialized training from AANE on doing couples therapy with neurodiverse couples.

  • I will do my very best to create a safe space for you on day one, so that you’ll feel free to express yourself and communicate openly, directly, and honestly.

I appreciate plain speaking and I will model that for you in a kindly way.

  • While medication has been proven to help with many different disorders, it has also been proven that time and time again, it simply isn’t enough by itself, or research has discovered a better drug-free approach.

Medication often treats the symptoms of a problem, without getting to the root of solving it, which is where good therapy comes in.

The decision to take psychotropic medications or not, is a highly personal one, and your personal wishes will be honored.

If in the course of treatment, you decided you might benefit from medications, I will refer you out to an appropriate provider.

Sometimes I will discuss reasons why a medical understanding of your problem is warranted.

Humans are turning more and more to holistic and natural alternatives to modern medicine to treat mental, physical and spiritual issues.

I fully support alternative options which may iinclude use of aromatherapy, essential oils, chiropractic and massage care, yoga, diet/exercise and nutrition options, and other means you might explore to improve your well being.

I can also refer you to professional holistic providers in the area for further consultation, if need be.

  • I don’t take insurance, and I am not on insurance panels.

  • Along with worthwhile results, there is nothing more important in our work than your confidentiality.

As with any doctor/patient agreement, your privacy is of the utmost importance.

I understand the vulnerability and openness that must come from each client in order to really do good work. Therapy itself can take a lot of trust, and that trust can only be developed over time.

I offer a confidentiality agreement before you begin your sessions, typically called ‘informed consent.’ It is your decision when and if you’d like to have share anything significant with any other healthcare providers, but this can only be done with your written consent.

Nothing you share in your sessions can be conveyed to another human, with the rare exceptions of suspected abuse of any kind (including child protection), or I have any reason to believe you may hurt yourself, or others. These situations are a matter of ethical procedures, and sometimes, even the law, and are not subject to the discretion of the clinician.
